About Pack 720

In October 1998, five young men and their parents formed Boy Scout Troop 720 at Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Glen Allen, VA. Within three months, the troop had nineteen members, and two years later, it had seventy-two members. Recognizing the explosive population growth in Richmond's Far West End, Jim Magruder, Mount Vernon's Charter Organization Representative, and Thomas Haw, the District Executive for the Cardinal District, began planning for a new Cub Scout pack to be hosted at Mount Vernon.

In August of 2000, Twin Hickory Elementary School opened its doors for the first time. After a neighbor pack was hosted on an interim basis for a year, Twin Hickory became available. Planning began in earnest, and with help from David Carson, Committee Chairperson of Troop 720, Susan Phillips, Cardinal District Unit Commissioner, and Phil Duggins, Field Director with the Council, preparations were made for the Pack's first/organizational meeting to be held on September 11, 2001. The meeting was subsequently moved to September 18th, and Pack 720 was chartered one week later.

Pack 720 Today

Today, the Pack has approximately 80+ Cub Scouts, and we expect to continue to grow due to the tremendous popularity of Scouting and the current housing boom in northwest Henrico County.

Our dens meet in our homes or at Mount Vernon Baptist Church, and our Pack Meetings are held monthly (usually the last Monday of each month) in the Twin Hickory Elementary School cafeteria (August - December) and Colonial Trail Elementary School cafeteria (January - June).

Pack 720 has won the National Quality Unit Award each year since it was founded.
